I have only used the basics of DNN for quite some time but still consider myself rather new. I'm moving my setup to a virtual server so therefore I would like to know the best practice in setting up my dns records vs using the portal aliases within dnn.

In regards to SEO is it best to set each domain up in the dns as a separate Zone and then allow DNN to either be a alias or separate portal or should I create a master domain in my DNS records and point similar domains to it as domain aliases in my Plesk panel and then set them up in dotnetnuke as aliases or separate portals depending on their use. It seems to work either way but I would like to make sure I am getting the best possible SEO coverage.

Here is an example of my domain usage:

www.unitedrealtyamerica.com  (will be main web portal)
www.unitedrealtytexas.com (separate portal for state)
www.unitedrealtyofdenton.com (separate portal for individual city)

can the dns records for the above be under one zone with the state and city pointing to the main as an alias and then let DNN separate them back out using the portals?

Thanks in advance,

Tony

Tony,
Yes, you can do DNS Alias (CNAME) records and it will work. This is what I do for the 30+ DNN sites that we host.

Thanks for the reply, I was mainly concerned with the SEO factor of doing such. I need the best practice as far as the SEO for each of the sites as well.
Naturally creating the alias in my Plesk Panel makes it easier to manage but If I lose SEO by doing so I would rather take the long road and create individual zones for each of my domains in Plesk and then allow DNN to do the work of separating out the websites using portals.

Thanks again
Tony

Just a thought here... If you are doing that... I would probably use subdomains... So... texas.unitedreality.com and whatnot...

Mike,

That would definitely be the best case scenario but I am not quite rich enough to own that level of a name, lol. I have to stick with branding my site with the full domain and varying by State or City. That is a good thought though!
