First off, WOW!. Simply WOW!  What an amazing difference.  It feels like a completely new product and it feels good.  The new UI is awesome.

Some notes I observed (somewhat random):

1) Install - On the install screen, the drop down lists appear misaligned way off to the right.

2)  Admin panel - On the Host and Admin menus, I really like the new tabbed groups, but I think the labels for the groups are not quite right.  "Basic Controls" and "Advanced Controls" aren't really accurate.  Consider "Common Actions" / "Advanced Actions" or even "Common Tools" / "Advanced Tools".

3) Admin panel - I like the hover "Bookmark" function, but when it appear floated to the right, it intuitively looks like it belongs to the item to the right of my hover target because of proximity.  Consider floating it to the left instead so it is closer to the item in question.

4) Admin panel - One thing that has always bothered me in previous version and is still in the 7.0 CTP is that the "Pages" menu group doesn't have a link to the "Page Management" page.   Seems like the most obvious place to find it, don't you think?.

5) Admin panel - Consider removing the "Modules" menu item completely.  The "Modules" actions are specific to this page and would be more intuitive found under the new "Edit Page" menu on the right (nice by the way!).  Make "Add New Module" and "Add Existing Module" a sub group of the "Edit Page" pop up and you can reduce a little clutter from the main console.   The "Find More Modules" link would be better shown as a hyperlink on the slick new "pop up sliding module picker thingy" (that appears when you click "Add New Module").  From a UX perspective, if I don't find what I am looking for in this list, now is the time I am most likely going to want to "Find More Modules"

6)  Admin panel - Along the line of simpler is better, if you eliminate the "Modules" group, consider also removing the "Pages" and "Users" groups.  Perhaps, these could become sub tabs of the Tools menu?  Simpler is better!

7) Admin panel - One thing I would REALLY REALLY like to see is the ability to add a specific "module definition" in the case where a module has multiple "definitions".  For example, the core blog module has like 5 parts.  There are great number of marketplace modules that also have multiple parts.  When all I need is one part (definition) it is quite annoying to have to drop all the parts on the page and then delete all the parts I don't need.  Consider a UI that would allow the user to see the individual module definitions for a module and place only one.  to keep it simple, if the module only has one definition then nothing changes.  However, if it has multiple parts, then perhaps there are child items under the main module item that can be individually selected.

More to come :)

1) please be aware that this is a ctp with some issues

2) DNN has a great tradition in useful classifications like "basic settings", "advanced settings", "other settings" and "more settings". Be aware, this helps novice users keeping focused on the product.

3) hm, I didn't succeed in getting the hover effect, sorry

4) "Page management" is an admin feature,, which technically doesn't belong to any page editor menu

5)  Are you sure, anyone would look for a module under "edit page"? I would start integrating "pages" and "edit page"

6) sorry, but would you really look for "users" in "edit page"? Of course, any item may be placed within a submenu - providing the user with more time to consider, what they really want to do, while looking for the proper command ;)

7) IMHO, the problem exists the other way round: when adding a module, the module should be able to offer alternative "sets" - consisting of a single or multiple modules. But even this option should not be selected from a list of obscurely named items, creating past midnite by differently talented developers, but according to the use case of the module. I know websites wit half a dozen news modules, HTML module replacements etc., where none of the authors is able to pick the proper one in more than 10% of use cases.

I am looking forwad to your other feedback :-))

On point 4, I definitely agree with Jay. I an quite used to page management being in the admin area, but I still for some reason expect it in the "Pages" menu because it seems so intuitive. I was just training some others Friday and they said the same thing as soon as they saw how useful the page management module is...

Maybe there's a way a link could be put there that just hides for non-admins or something.

Mike, I agree about ituitiveness, but this is not the base of control panel and administration is built on. All the menu items are just modules based on technical constraints. If we want an intuitive structure, we would need sth like

Adminsistration

  • Design
  • Content & Navigation
  • Files and Links
  • Languages
  • Search & URL Redirection
  • Marketing, Banners and Search Engines
  • Registration, &Membership (Users & Roles)
  • Services (Scheduler, SQL. Lists)
  • Extensions
  • Support (Dashboard, ...)
  • Websites and Site Settings

But I sure, we agree - this is far out of scope.

Understood, just pointing out what I saw.

2) DNN has a great tradition in useful classifications like "basic settings", "advanced settings", "other settings" and "more settings". Be aware, this helps novice users keeping focused on the product.

OK, even "Basic Settings" / "Advanced Settings" are better than "Basic Controls" / "Advanced Controls".  Either way, we seem to agree that "Controls" is not really the best word choice.  I know it's nit picky but if we are redoing the UX, we may as well do the best we can while the covers are off.

3) hm, I didn't succeed in getting the hover effect, sorry

Interesting.  When I hover over items in Host and Admin menus, I get an "bookmark" link  that allows me to add that item to the Bookmark tab.  You don't get that?

4) "Page management" is an admin feature,, which technically doesn't belong to any page editor menu

I understand the Page Management page/module has additional security concerns beyond the ability to edit the current page.  But that doesn't change the fact that it is naturally intuitive to expect to find a link to the  "Page Management" module under a menu group called "Pages".  Remember, you have been deep in DNN for 10 years have trained yourself on where it is.  New people almost ALWAYS first go to the "Pages" menu group when trying to find the "Page Management" module.  That fact alone is proof enough it should be there.

5)  Are you sure, anyone would look for a module under "edit page"? I would start integrating "pages" and "edit page"

Absolutely!  Again you need to look at this through the eyes of a new user.  As a new user, it seems intuitive that "adding content to page" (ie, a module) would be found under the section related to editing the page.  That is what I am doing, editing a page, so why wouldn't the options to add new content to the page be found there?  Again, I know it a slight shift from how its been done in the past, but that doesn't mean we can't improve upon the past.

6) sorry, but would you really look for "users" in "edit page"? Of course, any item may be placed within a submenu - providing the user with more time to consider, what they really want to do, while looking for the proper command ;)

I think you misread my comment.  I said "perhaps" these could moved into the Tools menu group. not the Edit Page group.  They wouldn't make sense under the "Edit Page" group since they aren't page specific.  I'm not completely sold on the idea, just food for thought on how to make the Admin look even more clean.

7) IMHO, the problem exists the other way round: when adding a module, the module should be able to offer alternative "sets" - consisting of a single or multiple modules. But even this option should not be selected from a list of obscurely named items, creating past midnite by differently talented developers, but according to the use case of the module. I know websites wit half a dozen news modules, HTML module replacements etc., where none of the authors is able to pick the proper one in more than 10%of use cases.

I didn't really understand your comment, I think maybe its a language or cultural gap.  It might be easier to explain it via an image.  Basically, the problem is with multi-part modules that have lots of Module Definitions.  By default, when you instantiate a module on a page, EVERY module definition gets placed on the page.  You then have to go and delete all the ones you don't want.  It's really more a one time pain when setting it up so its not a huge deal, but it always bothers me.

I am looking forwad to your other feedback :-))
