Hi,

I think I know the answer to this question already but....

My hosting company today suddenly decided they wont set permissions on the root directory any longer. This is a host I have some 20 or so sites hosted with already. I can set all the permissions I need on the files and directories within the virtual root but not the virtual root itself.

Does this mean no more installing DNN or would it run with the correct permissions on everything but the virtual root?

Is DNN installed in the root, or in a folder? Are they going to change the existing permissions which allow you to run DNN?

Create a new folder and test install a new dnn installation in your new folder. That's the only way to find out if you really have a problem or not.

you will need to grant full permission for the root folder your DNN installation is residing in adn read permission for anonymous users - otherwise some features will not work properly and you need to move DNN to virtual subfolder - or look for a different hosting provider.

Hosting company suggest install DNN in sub directory (set a virtual) of the root with full permissions on the sub directory, then once install is complete move the install to the root directory and delete the virtual sub directory. Won't this still cause issues with running upgrades and installing modules?

Andrew, suggested method would work, but I am not sure, whether this might cause new troubles on upgrades (when replacing the files - you might need to re-apply permissions on every upgrade. Maybe you should consider moving to a more suitable hosting company.
