There is something fishy going on with the SQL Express 2005. I have definitely created these databases (dotnetnuke, database, etc.) and have even setup users and passwords--but no connection can be established.

I tried the default SQLExpress string that is in the default installation web.config file--cus I read that should work out of the box. Irony is that I can connect to all these databases in VStudio no problem. Here are two samples... the first is the default dnn string.

DEFAULT [Yes, I created the Database.mdf in the SQL express studio; I also created a username/password with appropriate permissions... though they don't appear below.]

<connectionStrings>

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

</connectionStrings>

<appSettings>

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules -->

<add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"/>

</appSettings>

EXAMPLE #2.... using a database I created, along with username/password. This connection string works inside Visual Studio with a basic application....

<connectionStrings>

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express -->

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\v3.2.2_Lakeside.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True;uid=***;pwd=****" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

</connectionStrings>

<appSettings>

<!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules -->

<add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\v3.2.2_Lakeside.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True;uid=***;pwd=****" />

</appSettings>
