I am trying to make a copy of the current DNN site that we use for our intranet because the upgrade always fails. i wanted to make a duplicate so i could try upgrading that and see if i could make any progress.

i don't even know where to begin with trouble shooting because the only page i can get to display is the generic DotNetNuke Error page without an error description or number.

 i am using server 2008, iis 7.5, DNN 5.4.4

can anyone point me in a direction that will help determine what the problem is?

you need to add the new address as domain alias into the database - either via UI in Admin :: Site Settings prior to the move or directly in the database, table PortalAlias.

Timothy,
Here's what I do.
Create a new Portal Alias for one of your portals that uses the IP address that you will use for the copy (as configured in IIS).
Make a copy of your entire DNN installation folder on IIS.
Configure a new site in IIS that points to the new folder.
Backup your existing DNN database.
Restore your backup as a COPY of the database.
Modify the web.config file in the copy of the site (folder) to point to the COPY of the database.
Test the new site (I make a simple change to the home page of the portal that's mapped to the new IP and confirm that the change is only on the one copy).
As long as the new site is "new", you can test your upgrades.

I was able to get the site to come up by modifying the portal alias table in SQL.

now when I login the authentication for users doesn't work but i can login as host.

I am going to try and upgrade it and see if i can get the authentication working after that.

Thanks for the answer it helped tremendously.
