I have a DNN 6.0 site where all users must login. The site URL is: http://connect.bayltd.com/bayconnection. The url for the login page is: http://connect.bayltd.com/bayconnecti.... I am not using a special login page...just the standard login page that is automatically provided by DNN. I did add some text, using the Admin > Languages tool. This site has been running fine for several months. However, recently, users are NOT able to get to the login page when they simply use the site url. Instead, they get a "Page Not Found" message. Also, when users logout, they get this message (instead of getting the login page). It seems like the site URL does not know to redirect to the login page. This is a huge inconvenience for our users, so any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Miller,

OK, first off your DNN install is not at the root. Make sure you have the portal alias under site settings properly configured for http://connect.bayltd.com/bayconnection/

I'm not sure how you were able to add text to the dynamically created login control as it is not normally possible to view this page once logged in. Also with DNN you can normally just navigate to mydomain.com/login.aspx and you will have the login page.

IMHO I would have done this in one of two ways.

1) Created my own login page and added the login control/module and text there and then under site settings specify the name of  the login page. You would of course have to set the view permissions on your home page and all other pages to registered users only and your login page to everyone can view. That way when a user navigates to your home page and they are not authenticated they would be directed to the login page. Once logged in they would then be redirected back to the home page.

2) You could have added a login module to your home page. Allow all users to view the home page but hide any other content on it using the module level permissions. You could then hide the login module for users who are authenticated and reveal any content. Permissions for your additional pages would also need to be set to register users, or whatever role you want so they are not visible until the user logs in.

I hope this helps and you get it worked out. Right now it doesn't seem to know where your home page is so check the portal alias. Might also be an IIS problem, not sure. I can view your login page, Job posting page and Application Form once I straighten out the url you posted above without logging in?

Yes, I know that the installation is not on the root, but this is where I was instructed to put it. Although not as direct as desired, this location was not causing problems before.

Yes, I have double-checked that the Default Alias is connect.bayltd.com/bayconnection. This has not changed.

I added text to the login control by using Admin>Languages and then clicking on the pencil icon that says Site. There is a box that says "Resource Name: MESSAGE_LOGIN_INSTRUCTIONS.Text". I entered the text there.

When I try to navigate to: http://connect.bayltd.com/bayconnecti..., the login page does NOT come up. The only valid path to the login page seems to be: http://connect.bayltd.com/bayconnecti....

I think it is also significant that the user gets a "Page Not Found" message when logging out. Shouldn't the user return to the login page when they log out?

I respect your suggestion to use a custom login page. This problem (with not being able to get to the login page from the site URL) surfaced today. To my knowledge, it did not exist prior to that.

Yesterday, I was attempting to modify the text I had put on the Login page. It took me quite a while to figure out that I had originally entered the text using the Admin>Languages feature. During my efforts yesterday, I DID attempt to create a custom login page. However, I do not seem to have the DNN Login Module in my list of available modules. Therefore, I downloaded and attempted to use the free module, GP_Hosting_login_01.02.00. Unfortunately, that module is very limited and does not offer the "Remember Login" and "Retrieve Password" features that the standard DNN login module has.

So...This leaves me with my current problem. I do not see any indicatin (from file date information) that I accidently modified any files. When comparing the file structure to a previous backup, I don't see that any are missing.

My one fear is that, in my attempt to use the GP_Hosting_login module, I made a database change that is causing this problem.

I really need to find an answer!

It appears that something is causing the URL to be duplicated. Using Firefox, I was able to verify that something is generating the following url:

http://connect.bayltd.com/bayconnection/  http://connect.bayltd.com/bayconnection/default.aspx?ctl=login

(I split it so you could see the two parts)

Obviously, only the second part is needed.

Does this give anyone a clue as to what is happening here?

Hi Miller,

Can you revert back to your previous site you had before the install of the 3rd party module? Do you have a recent backup of the file system and database?

Rich
