Recently a prospective customer said that they had checked and decided not to go with DNN because tests had shown Wordpress loads pages much faster, and that Google uses page load speed as an SEO (ranking) parameter. I looked at the report they used and, yes DNN does load a lot of files. http://www.noisylittlemonkey.com/word...

Is this SEO ranking issue about page loading speed a valid argument for not going with DNN and what can be done to beat the Wordpress load speed?

They are comparing how they come out of the box and comparing an older version of DNN before the client resource management enhancements in 6.1. These enhancements significantly reduce the payload of DotNetNuke.

If it were me, I wouldn't be choosing a CMS based completely on how they load in Google PageSpeed out of the box. Both can be configured for excellent performance and you must look at more than their "pagespeed" score out of the box when selecting a CMS.

My own site scores higher than the wordpress example they gave:

I've had to go up against WordPress a few times and page loading speed was never one of the major considerations.  If you take the time to performance tune your DNN site, you should see comparable performance to any other CMS.

One thing you may want to do to increase INITIAL page loading speeds is sign up for an account at www.dnnmonitor.com - I noticed a great difference in initial page load times when I used their free service.
