Hello,

Is there any way to disable the ability for a user to follow another user? Or is there a way for a user to prevent others from following them?

I ask this because from what I can see in 6.2, if I follow someone then I can see everything they post to the Journal and that user has no control over it. It seems that when posting to the Journal when you choose to allow only friends to see the post, followers can also see it. This seems to be a privacy gap if I have no say who is following me, and they can see my posts.

Is there any current solution for this?

Thanks,

Bill

When you post in the journal you can secure the post by:

* Everyone
* Community Members
* Friends
* Private

Everyone includes unauthenticated users, so I don't think that "follow" is the mechanism by which you can see people's journal posts.

A user does have control over Friends though. So if they want to look down to a particular subset of users that is what they should select when posting to the journal.

Currently follow doesn't do anything from my testing.

Here is the testing that I have done on this:

  1. Created 2 regular (non-admin) users: User A, User B
  2. User A logs in and "follows" User B
  3. User B posts an entry into the Journal and marks the post for "Friends Only"
  4. User A can see this post in the Journal

It seems to me like this is a privacy concern because User B has no control over the fact that someone  can see his post(s) that he has not approved, and really all his site activity in modules that post to the journal. I am currently building out a social site and I know sooner or later users are going to object to this, which seems to be an oversight in design.If Facebook has had so much pushback over privacy issues, no doubt anyone building a social site will too. Perhaps I've overlooked something - if anyone could confirm this or offer a workaround I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Bill

please log it as an issue to support.dotnetnuke.com (based on your description it would seem that the code is checking for friends and followers and not just friends)
