Are you using the standard SQL database installation option or custom during the first part of the DNN installation?

If the standard installation is selected in the DNN install wizard this will make use of the user instance file database Database.mdf located in the site's App_Data folder. This option requires that the allow user instance option be enabled for the SQL Express server and that the application pool setup in IIS have the Load User Profile option (under the application pool's advanced settings) set to true.

By your comment that you can "get all the way into the database" I am thinking that you have already created an empty database for the site using a tool such as MS SQL Server Management Studio. If that is the case you should choose the "custom" database option in the DNN install wizard then enter the database server name, database name, and select either Integrated Windows or SQL Server Authorization. The latter will then allow you to enter the database user name and passward.
