I currently have a 3.1.1 install which is running fine but I'm looking to upgrade to take advantage of some fixes and improvements.  Bad idea?  With that being said, I'm looking for thoughts on the following points:

Avoiding the current RCs how stable is version 4?  Should I stay within the 3x series which has a limited future or move up to 4x now and avoid doing it later?

Is there a way to upgrade from 3.1.1 to the 4x series?  I see an upgrade file under the download section at www.dotnetnuke.com but it appears to only work within the 4x series.  Is this true?  If not, then I see it as pointless to upgrade and improve my 3x install if, in the end, I have to rebuild the site entirely down the road.  I would be willing to do the upgrade without any add-on modules as it would still save me hours, if not days, of work.

Assuming that my host supports both .NET 2.0 and SQL 2005, are they worth moving up to for increased performance?  Will 3x benefit from these or should I stay away until I move to 4x?

Thanks for your thoughts everyone!

You should be able to upgrade 3.x to 4.x, if you use the Install package (the Source package will not work, 4.x uses a different folder structure), and I would stick with 4.0.3 because the 4.3.1 Release Candidate is not a stable release.

My recommendation is to try and get a backup copy of your DB and files before you try any upgrade. In fact, if you have SQL Server and IIS on your local machine I would recommend you copy your files and DB to your local machine and try the install there first, so that if there are any issues you haven't hosed your live site.

As for if there is a performance benefit...I'm not sure but perhaps someone else has experience there
