Running 6.2.5 on GoDaddy.  I don't have an option to upgrade to 7 in the GoDaddy easy interface, as there was to upgrade from 6.0 to 6.2.  I also could not install a new instance of DNN 7.0.  I realized  I didn't have SQL 2008 or .NET 4.0.  I've modified my hosting account to these options now.  Then, I created a new 2008 DB, and restored the 6.2.5 database to it.  I only had to change the web.config to connect to that 2k8 database, but this is not the supported method for GoDaddy's easy application service.

At this point, after updating the hosting account, in the GoDaddy Applications tool; there is no option to 'upgrade' to 7.0; but I can install a new instance.

What I want to do is Install 7.0 to a new instance on GoDaddy, and then just restore my 6.2.5 SQL DB into the 7.0 database created when I install 7.0 clean.  Will that break it; or is all the core 7.0 code in the IIS files; not in the database?

Is there a better way to migrate all images and data from a 6.2.5 site to a 7.0 site?

Jeffrey,

You can do it but I don't think anyone can say with total certaintly that it'll work but I think it's your best option if you can't upgrade. Just be sure to get a back-up of the database beforehand.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I do not see how that would work. Upgrading is all about the files. The files and database both need to be from the same version. I use GoDaddy, but I have never used any easy interface. I simply use FTP to move the upgrade files to the website directory and then perform the upgrade. The upgrade takes care of the database.

Thanks,
Greg Hart
