Great idea these forums Vicenç, thanks.

As a kick-off: what ideas are currently floating around?

Concerning module content it would appear that the most simple approach would be to 'key' module content to ModuleId AND Locale. Then edit actions would need to take this into account and properly inform the editor (what locale am I editing for, which locales do not have content specified, etc)

Concerning the locale management we will need to build on the current chain (host/portal/user settings of locale) and add a hook into browser preferences and some persistent variable. These will then need to cascade properly to allow users to temporarily override locale settings and offer the most probable correct locale.

More ideas?

Peter

Hi, I think this is the topic I was waiting for

As many know, I have a multilingual site and a made some modules to make some kind of content localization.

The following points were detected by my forums

Locales.- At the moment, we can install a language in our DNN, but we are not able to select only those languages we need for a specific portal (a per portal use of installed languages)

How to detect locale.- It must be provided by letting administrators choose from user, portal, browser, querystring, etc . The EditURL and Navigate url must include the locale key natively when constructing URLs

Titles and properties.- Portal Settings, Tab Settings and module settings must include an interface to localize them based on possible languages

Search.- Search must include a key for locale and index words based on that key

Content.- The module must define the better storage for localized content, but the core must provide a simple methods to manage the content.

Locale selectors.- Modules and skin objects to select current language can be simple if we take the querystring option. Indexers like google could work better with this too (More friendly localized URLs)

Hope this helps.... I wil be back soon with more about this topic.

In 3.1.1 I added a new feature to disable any given language (even en-US) on any portal. So from now on you can have a portal configured with any languages you want. As of now, en-US is still the last resort for resource fallback, so for example if a portal has only es-ES language available and a resource key is not found in es-ES files, system en-US will still be used as a fallback.

This is something to change a bit in near future. I'd like to be able to configure the first fallback for any given language: a portal has es-ES, ca-ES, es-MX, ... I could have es-ES as a proven resource file which I would like to use as a fallback for all languages *-ES. A new fallback step could be added to first use this new parameter and finally if all went wrong use the system default fallback.

Not sure I follow you here. Why do you need to add locale to querystring? If all pages are dinamically build using current locale, no need for this.

Geert added a new language selector SKO on 3.1.1

Hi Vicenc.... great to start talking about this.

My first attempt was to make my localization without a querystring parameter, but when I started to make some tests with google and my site. I saw that only English (My default locale) was indexed. So, I built an option to include a querystring parameter for my locale

http://dnn.tiendaboliviana.com/web/Home/tabid/52/Locale/es-BO/Default.aspx

and

http://dnn.tiendaboliviana.com/web/Home/tabid/52/Locale/en-US/Default.aspx

then, users can reach my content using desired language and search engines can index my content based on that language too.

And..... you always have the option to have a default language for:

http://dnn.tiendaboliviana.com/web/default.aspx

Sorry if this is off thread, but I noticed that vmasanas mentioned ca-ES and locopon mentioned es-BO.  Are we going to see either one of these in the download area for language packs anytime soon?
