I recently moved my DNN from server1 to server2 and ran into a strange problem.

I copied all the DNN files over to the new server's IIS.

I made a backup of my DB and did a restore with the copy to the new server.

When I went to my Localhost on the new server, the DNN Installation page came up and I had to click next until I got to the page where it asks for the server name, user id and password. I could never get past this screen because the user id and password would fail logging into the db.

Finally, I created a new login with db owner rights to the db, and made the changes to the web.conf file, and the site came up.

Anyone know why the original username and password would could not be used?

I did notice one thing, the profile of the user was not exactly the same as the one in my origianl server even though the db was copied and restored.

Most likely the problem is one of an "orphaned" database user. Some background on the issue and ways to solve the problem are explained in the following article:
