After upgrading from 5.x to 7.x I am now unable to get in to the site and password retrieval isn't working either.

What can I do to correct this? I tried restoring from backups but everything went south from there.

Do you have a backup of the web.config?
If you have, please first check the line 

machineKey validationKey="xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" decryptionKey="yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" decryption="3DES" validation="SHA1"

in the file web.config in the site and the backup and see if they're identical.

Try making sure your SMTP settings are correct in the HostSettings table, then attempt to retrieve your password again.

Hey, not sure what the deal with not getting a password reset, but all the settings were correct. But thankfully all is well now in the world.

 You were spot on, I happen to be poking around the forums last night and found someone else didn't check their machine keys. And here I was hoping that the upgrade process would have taken care of that for me. Guess I better go back to the docs next time.
