Hi

We want to set up our new website on dotnetnuke, but i have one question:

Wich version of MS SQL Server do we need?

If i take a look to the MS papers, they write:

The Per Processor model is appropriate when:
• SQL Server is being used for external-facing Web sites or applications

Do we need a per Processor Licence?
Or is the free express version ok?
Or do we need only 1 CAL, because only the user "webserver" connects to the sql server?

 thanks for your answers!

regards
Martin

There are SQL versions (2005, 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 are examples of versions)

There are SQL editions (express, standard, enterprise are examples of editions)

Version, go 2008 R2 or 2012

As far as edition, yes, you can use Express (or Express with Advanced Tools if you want to use Reporting Services) and thus the database server is free. There is a per database size limit of10 Gb for Express, but that's pretty big, and you can go a long way before bumping up against that.

Of course, you can use other editions as well.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

is it legal to use SQL 2008 Express for a public website in dotnetnuke?
or do i need SQL 2008 CPU Licence?

That`s the question, one is free, the other one costs a little bit of money...

i`m a bit confused with the microsoft licencing paper, what do you guys use for a public website with a lot of users?

regards
Martin

SQL Server Express has a license, allowing to use it for public websites. You may use either SQL Server 2008 R2 Express or (I'd prefer) SQL Server 2012 Express. This should be sufficient for most of small and medium web sites. You should use either Advanced (including reporting services as well) or with tools (including Management Studio Express).
