Jim,

this depends - for instance, have a look at the blog module. The data there is not module but portal specific, and if you place another Blog module to a different page you will find the same entries there. In this case, you can need the portal ID instead of the module ID to link your data into DNN. Then you create a specific settings control (as in the Events Module for instance), and use your own settings table instaed of the ModuleSettings table - and there you can store the necessary connection string.

One last question. Will I be able to get to the controls settings even if the control is not place on a particular page.

Jim,

sorry, I did not understand your question. If you bundle the control with the module, it will be there, and if you store the data in your own table you may access it reading/writing from whereever you want. Of course you won't have access to it if there is no module on the page that accesses the data...

another place where you can set Portal specific settings is of course the table "PortalSettings". Therefore you also have an API and may save some work...
