We are trying to determine how we should setup DNN from a dev/testing/production environment standpoint.

At this point we will only be running a single site via DNN but this may be expanded in the future.  In addition to the basic content management of this site there will be ongoing module development.

Currently we have just a single development instance installed on a local dev box.  We are preparing to move this instance out to our production location but before we do I want to find out what is the best way to setup our environments.

Should we have both a production and dev/test environment?  With our “Production” environment would consisting of only content management (ie no module development) and then a separate test/dev environment where our “development” work can take place.

Or should we setup with 3 separate environments: dev, testing and production to handle our module development?

Any info that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Lee

I set up my 3 instances the same except only DEV has source code since I develop in DEV.

Once I develop my modules, I package them and install them on test. Once verified, I roll it out to PRD but only after backing up my site. This process keeps my environments in synch.

Not sure if that's what other do but it works well for me.
