Thanks for taking the time to check out my post.

I've been using a hosted DNN solution for some time now.  However, I find that as the ISP upgrades their services, that they frequently break my DNN site.  I'm tired of getting errors when I go to my website, and so I'd like to bring it in house.  I have a couple of related questions.

I'd like to install it on a win 8 pro box, and using IIS host using a dynamic IP address.  Anyone have thoughts on that?

I've spent the better part of the weekend screwing around with different database options.  Does DNN 7 work with both the 64 bit and 32 bit versions of SQL express? (2012).

I'd like to have the internal website up before I repoint the domain name.  I found when playing with DNN it often was sending me to the hosted site.  Is there any way to work with the same domain name locally before finally taking it live on the web?

Is there anything else I should be considering before making this move?

Thanks again for your time!

DNN works well with SQL Express in 32 and 64 bit (though I wouldn't run it on 32 bit anymore).
You might run DNN on a workstation, but be aware, that IIS on Windows 7 or 8 is not optimized for public web sites and dynamic IP may affect availability. you may edit /windows/system32/drivers/etc/host file to specify web sites, which shall be accessible via the local browser.

Thanks,

I setup a named instance of SQLExpress 2012 on my workstation, and then ran the MS Web installer for community edition of DNN7.

It all seemed ok, but it failed to connect to the database when I attempted to browse to the site using webmatrix.

I didn't use mixed mode and I didn't turn on the filestream. Based on the connection string I thought it was using Windows Authentication.

Any ideas?

Turns out that occasionally there is a problem with the SQL Express install and you have to delete the folder in this location for a good connection:

If you check your error log in ssms and have :

Error: 15372, Severity: 16, State: 1.
Failed to generate a user instance od SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.

Solution for this error is fairly simple.

Fix/Workaround/Solution:

For XP:
Delete the directory “c:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS ”

For Vista:
Delete the directory “c:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft Sql Server Data\SQLEXPRESS”

Now to configure it ;)

If anyone has any suggestions for getting around the port 80 block ISP's have up I'd appreciate it.
