I have tried to change the file security  to secure using the filemangaer.

on update the message states that the change is successful however   i can still access the files through urls directly (after logging out) -and from another browser)

 there is no other indication that the change has been applied.

How can I diagnose this further. i need to protect sensitive uploads.

if you access a file by its exact Url (eg. h_t_t_p://my.doma.in/Portals/0/docs/123.pdf) then DNN security is not involved. Create a "Secure" or "Database" folder and move the documents there, so they can only be downloaded by using the DNN handler (Linkclick.aspx...).

However, if you know how a "Secure" folder works, it is still possible to download the file as e.g. h_t_t_p://my.doma.in/Portals/0/secdocs/123.pdf.resources. Just rename it by removing the ".resources" - and you have the original file.

Michael,

I don't believe that's correct.

Removing the ".resources" from the end of the filename would be similar to just saying "replace all of the As in the filename with 7s." It becomes a different file.

My testing (when you have stated this) has shown it NOT to work the way you indicate. With your example, does there happen to be the file both with and without the .resources extension?

The same image is also in a secured folder called test

You can't browse to:  http://dnn7practice.archchicago.org/P... because that file does NOT exist in that folder.  The file is Koala.jpg.resources. Trying to browse directly to the .resources file will fail because "The request filtering module is configured to deny the file extension."

your're right - this is an IIS setting (request filtering). So a secure folder is secaure (as long as you don't remove the request filter and add a MIME type for .resources...).

In essence, if I control the security of the server and my loggins and roles the files are secure.
