Thanks Scott. All I have in the Portals/_default/logs directory are lots of .resources files. How do I view the contents of these?

OK now I'm worried! I opened them with notepad, and 90% of those ".resources" files are empty, right up to the Installerlog2013723.resources corresponding to the upgrade I did yesterday, which is the first one containing any data since 9th July (and as I guess you probably know, there's one created each day). Since the Installerlog, both subsequent files 2013.07.23.log and 2013.07.24.log are full of the same error over and over, which is basically "DotNetNuke.Services.Search.Internals.LuceneControllerImpl - Search Document error: Portal ID: 0, Tab ID: 83, Module ID: 430 ... System.ArgumentException: The argument 'Title' cannot be null or empty".

To all appearances, everything is working normally, so if I hadn't looked in there I wouldn't be worried!

So in answer to your suggestion Scott, there are no log4net files visible, and the only errors in the _default/logs directory have happened since I upgraded from 7.0 to 7.1 and don't correspond to the period when Portal 0 wasn't working.

... some further info - ModuleID 430 is the NB_Store_ProductList. I guess I need to poke around in the settings for that, although why it suddenly failed after upgrading to 7.1 is puzzling.
