Update.  The 2 upgraded 7.1 installations were moved from very old servers to new servers to allow 7.1 to be installed (.NET 4.0 needed).

During the install, somehow the timer method was switched to None.  I switched it back to timer mode and all is well with Search.  REALLY like the predictive drop down function as you type in the search box.

Oops, I meant scheduler, like the subject line says.  Also, I was a bit suprised because I had manually run the re-index, but nothing happened.  I guess the re-index function puts an immediate job in the scheduler.  Then it makes sense that nothing worked even after re-indexing.

Sorry for the confusion.

I get these errors when i open the search page:
