I've upgraded to DNN 7 to be able to use Device Detection.

When I select the Device Detection Management option, I'm asked for a Premium Data license key. I don't have one. And to obtain one, it looks like you have to pay, quite a lot.

I thought Device Detection would enable me to give my website a different layout for mobile devices, so for instance a different CSS-file, less content. And this without having to built a mobile version next to my desktop one.

Is this possible? Without the license key?

Where can I find some good information about the options I have (as a user without a license)?

So my question is, what are my 'Responsive Design' options in DNN7?

Device detection is limited in CE to isMobile or not isMobile testing - you need full data licence to dig deeper.

There are many cases where just switching to a different skin wont really fix the mobile experience.
As a result for many companies = the best approach and the one that most organisations take is to build a second portal for mobile access.
And perform a redirect to that portal for mobile.

The ADMIN -> Site Redirection Management tool is designed to handle this sort of redirection process - in which case the redirection to different
pages or a different portal will control the skin that is utilised.

Your other option is to build a responsive skin that works across all sorts of devices - there are many examples out there now of skins that work this way.
There is a pretty good presentation to be found here - http://www.slideshare.net/gravityworksdd/responsive-web-design-for-dotnetnuke.

In addition - http://modernizr.com/ - is another good place to start - it brings some really powerful media detection to the client side
