If there are no developers who want to build modules like ActiveForums or URLMaster then my conclusion is that there is no market big enough so that people can make money there. I have always been a little surprised about the number of clients such companies have, I doubt it is good business.

The concern is not if there is demand but if there would be any value.  In other words, what features would the module have to have in order to justify paying for it over one of the free modules?

You also have to consider the fact that Will eventually provided a free version of ActiveForums once a competing open source forums module was created for DNN.  Why?

If a commercial forums module was going to be developed for DNN it would have to be exceptionally amazing, backed by outstanding support and aggressive updates.  I'll take that challenge.

What exit strategy will you provide to your customers when your product is taken off the market by acquisition or simply shut down

People often forget that the true value of forums and other social features is the time the users spend on putting information into it. Sharing thoughts, info and media. Interacting and establishing relationships. The value increase hour by hour and is paid for with the time and effort of your users. Putting all that data into someone elses proprietary software is like giving away the key to your treasure chest to someone else and trusting them forever. You are going to regret it. Unless a viable exit strategy is provided and guaranteed by the vendor.

Your right.  So then at the very least it should support iPortable. Even with exported data, there is no guarantee you would be able to "easily" walk away and into another forums module if you needed to.  It might work if it was exported in a simple format that other developers could easily extract from. You could provide the source like Mariette suggests, but you would need to be a developer to work with it so at that point your right back where we are now.

There is so much more that can be developed, it seems like a waste of time to throw it into a module that already exists and that has an active group working on it.  If it's just the email monitor and that is what people are asking for then it shouldn't be too long before that is provided.  No?

If there truly is a gap and people want it then I'll build it.

Or perhaps the solution is to offer import and export of the data with the open source forum modules in the first release.  That way you always have a way out.
