What do you think of this business idea?

Creating professional websites for companies and organizations is where the moneys at. Depending on the customer, you can charge tens of thousands of dollars for a single site. Get paid for all the work you do and charge by the hour. And thats just a handful of customers. Customers that can and will pay for quality.

On the other side, imagine selling 1000 module licenses at 50 bucks a pop. How would your inbox look like when you get home at night?  It would be an absolute nightmare.

I will recommend that you ally your self with a web designer and get to it. Being able to develop your own custom extensions is a very useful tool. But, just as the secret sauce to create sites that excel above the competition. Social, engaging and delicious sites. Internet presence is all or nothing these days. Being able to deliver and program websites is a valuable and profitable line of business. Selling proprietary blobs for a few bucks and a lot of promises, is not.

This doesn't make sense for individuals or small companies. I can't afford $1000's but certainly I can afford $50.

For #3: if you make enough money to pay all the employees and make some profit, you don't need investor. Just like a typical store or restaurant. The wheels are spinning.

Is DNN proprietary software? Why?

DNN used to be a 100% free and open source project where businesses could purchase commercial support contracts. This is not the case anymore. DNN has turned into a hybrid with a mostly open core and proprietary extensions. The horrible Teleriks have infected the core with their bloat and bugs. The well known name (DotNetNuke) have been depreciated and changed to something fancy. The forum has been hidden from the eyes of the new and curious user. The open core is almost impossible to download from the main site. The third party market have been assimilated into the "corporation" and the most popular upgrades and extensions have been taken off the market (#1 and #2 from my previous post). The power of balance have shifted into a single point of failure (the corp) ready to be bought and consumed by something bigger and much less open source friendly entity.

Within 5 years, a major player in the Windows Server software business will make an offer to the owners of Evoq that they can't refuse. The "player" will be looking for a CMS they can sell to their existing user base and perhaps expand their customer base within the fortune 500 market. The "founding fathers" of DotNetNuke will cash out and go on with their lives. The new owner will put the final nail in the open source DNN coffin.

The only thing that can save open source DotNetNuke (yes, DotNetNuke) is a separate community that can sustain and manage itself. There is still time, but it is running out.

Are Telerik controls to blame or the way or provider that DNN is using to blame?

I blame both. I blame Telerik for creating horrible bloated asp.net controls full of bugs. And I blame "the corp" for bringing this disease into the core. When Telerik goes out of business (and they will, trust me) we have a problem.

For someone like me who never did such work, who doesn't have a website for his business or knows how to get such customers, or can support big companies part time or a major company trusting a one man company, I would say this option it not feasible now. It makes sense to start small and get big later. Thats why I was considering creating a module at first, to get experience and learn the ins and outs of DNN during development.

But I would be hopeful if DNN consultation would exist years to come.

You seem to have a strong opinion about Telerik.. is that from recent personal experiences? From what I see from the number of products, online presence, awards, and amount of ads, they seem to be growing. Some known people work as evangelists for them... although some others have left the company like Chris Sells and Jesse Liberty.
