Hi everybody and I appreciate you looking. So the back ground of this question, is that I had taken over a non-profit website that was failing, fixed it up and made it usable. I have always worked on pre-made or existing websites and never made one from scratch. I have spent approximately 6 months or more getting this website functional and can’t tell you how many hours I have put in it. Now that it is running perfect and usable, with 300 new members, the owner of the server that the website is using decided that now that it is working and functional he doesn’t want it on his server. I am computer savey…. Somewhat, but I am a police officer by trade.
So here where I need some advice.
1. What do I need from the current server (files ect.) considering that I have a lot of tables made using sql inquires (aspen.net, dnn, ect).
2. As this is a non-profit website, what is the cheapest way we can keep it running and what other programs/website stuff do we need? (like what are the things that you have to pay for to keep a website up). Sorry if this is basic stuff like I said I never built one from scratch.
3. I am attempting to possibly get a free old server…. But if that doesn’t work out how would I host it a web company’s server?
4. I have a decent home computer (dual raided 500gb 7200 rpm hard drives, AMD 6 core processor, 2 gb video card 16 gb of ram) which is moderately over clocked, fast internet service and a lot of room on the hard drives…. Could I move the website to my home computer and would this be safe? This is what I am hoping to do and I have a friend who is also a police officer who study’s server hacking for work related purposes and will test it if I can get it done.
Any and all help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.
