Howdy, folks.  I have a strange situation where the validation email sent out to new users only works if the user has an email address on the web site's server.  If I set up a regular or forwarding account, the email gets delivered.  If not, the event shown below is created.

Is this something I've missed in the DNN settings or something on the server?  I can't find anything else to change.

its an issue at the mailserver, typically it indicates that either a reverse-dns is occurring (and the domain doesn't exist), or (more likely) that the mail server doesn't allow sending out to external domains i.e. only within company controlled domains (some hosting providers only allow mails to or from the domain you host with them) e.g. see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10630050/what-is-the-mistake-sending-email-in-asp-net

Thank you, Cathal Connolly.

I contacted my hosting service.  They told me I hadn't set up the SMTP settings properly, which was half right.  Once I'd done what they said (gone back to BASIC authentication with valid username), it still didn't work.  I had created a "donotreply" address without a mailbox.  On a hunch, I gave the account a 1KB mailbox and validation emails were sent after that.

Mark
