I think that DNN could really benefit from such a scheme, and it would raise the quality of the entire platform.  Is there such a system in place?

Certification of 3rd party modules means better stability, installation, uninstallation and overall quality.  Similar to Apple, Microsoft and many other software eco-systems.

Certification points I would include would be:

  • Product documentation
  • Installation and (full) un-installation.  So many modules leave files, database objects etc when uninstalled.
  • Performance testing (SQL indexes?, Scheduler timers etc)
  • Best-practice architecture (DNN + web MVC/forms/ etc...)
  • SEO best practice, including URL management
  • Upgradability
  • Proper release notes and EULA
  • Database referential integrity and other constraints.  So many modules have very poor SQL design and architecture.
  • Vendor reliability, authenticity, support, sales etc.  Proper contact details on their website

I'm sure there are other points.

Is there such a scheme out there for DNN?  I've spent far too long cleaning up, repairing and hassling vendors of DNN modules and skins for things that should just work...

Any thoughts?

Thanks for the update. Good to see there is a system in place.

It would be good if the DNN store had a separate category for vendors that have been certified. From a quick look at the dnn store, it seems that there is absolutely no mention of this on the entire site, so you don't know if you're buying a module that has been through this process or not.

Currently, a lot of the "Top vendors" do not adhere to the best-practice of the scheme.

I would have thought that such a scheme would be a prominent part of the commercial side of DNN.

I'm not aware of the plans of the store (different team) but I know that EVS verification of all new releases was talked about (we've already started to surface if something is azure compatible)
