So here's the error message I'm getting from the SMTP Server. Any thoughts of why the sender is <>?

Unable to deliver this message because the follow error was encountered: "This message is a delivery status notification that cannot be delivered.".

The specific error code was 0xC00402C7.

The message sender was <>.

it looks like the sender address is invalid. please make sure, you entered a valid email address for the admin users, specified in Admin > Site Settings.

It's actually is using the Site Administrator to send the email, so why it would be blank is beyond me though. The profile of the site admin is me who is also a SuperUser. Although the host email address is not the same, it sends the Host SMTP Test email just fine. I've also tested changing the host email address to myself as well, to no avail.

I'd check the user email - the test smtp function uses the host email as both to and from - whereas a registration mail uses the site admin (defaults to host) as to, but the users email as from - if the user does not have a valid email, or the email server does not allow sending to that email domain (some email servers only allow sending within limited domains) then this could be the problem you're seeing.

Just to update this post.

It took quite a bit of research to solve the problem. Running in an Azure VM with Exchange Online. When setting up the SMTP relay server smart host, you must give it a user that it sends emails out as. This email address does not have to match up to the Admin's email address, however you do have to give the relay email address permission to send on your behalf in Exchange.

Not a huge issue, but an interesting one. About the only thing that DNN could do to make it easier is for emails not to be sent from the admin's email but from a specified email account.
