Good Day

I'm new to DNN and have been asked to look into saving a file to the DNN database from a separate web application. How this will work is a User will use our web application to upload a file to the server, but when it gets upload we would want to save the file to the DNN database as well in order for someone to manage it using DNN as the CMS portal.

Any advice on this would be appreciated as I haven't been able to find what I'm looking for.

there are a number of details missing:
- is the uploading user a registered member of DNN website
- is target folder a folder of the DNN website?
- are there 48 virgins awaiting the upload and hooraying the contributor?

Cheers from Germany,

The user will be registered on our website, but not necessarily on the DNN website. We can always add the user to the DNN website when they register on our website or use some sort of Admin user details if need be.

As far as I know the target folder is not part of the DNN website, but if this needs to be changed or added then we will have to do it.  We will just need to be able to access it using a dns name and not the portal ID when uploading the file.

I'm new to this so need guidance on how to go about this type of development for the uploading of documents. I have found references to an AddFile method as well as UploadFile, but not sure what the proper way is to upload a file from outside of DNN website.

Unless you have direct access to your own full licence of ms sql I would suggest that you avoid uploading files to mssql ... Doing so can put very large loads on the server which in most cases are really not needed. To mention nothing of backup and database size logistics.

Having said this ... If this is what you want to do ... and I'm assuming you are taking about uploading a file so that it would be accessible via the dnn file manager using the dnn sql file provider ... Your best approach would be to do this as some sort of web service ....

Basically create a web service in dnn that handles the internal API calls to the dnn file system ... And then make calls to that web service from your external web app.
