Hi,

I am getting the following error when trying to install DNN (04.03.01):

ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider

The connection string is:

connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=DNN_user;pwd=***r;"

and is in both connectionstrings and appsettings in web.config (copied from release.config)

I have added the database and appropriate user and can login to the database locally as the DNN_user account.

This is running on a VPS machine (Windows 2003 x64 +SQL Server 2000). The database displays as (local) in enterprise manager.

As alternative server names, I;ve tried '.', machine name, ip address, localhost, 127.0.0.1 but nothing works.

Anyone got any ideas?

thanks,

lukemack.

Did you give the VS SQL install a named instance?  Can you log into QA using the machine name (VPS name) as you specified in the config file?

Are you using MS Virtual Server or VM Ware's?

Many thanks for the reply.

VS SQL? I don't know what that means. by VPS I mean Virtual Private Server as provided by Webfusion.co.uk (PIPEX) - nothing to do with any MS or VM software. It does run Plesk, though. I didnt install SQL server myself as it comes pre-installed on the VPS. If you view it through SQL Server Enterprise Manager the server instance is listed as (local).

By QA, I assume you mean Query Analyser which just uses the login from Enterprise Manager - I can login as the windows user, sa and DNN_user fine.

p.s.

If I run QA standalone, I can also log in - the SQL server instance is displayed as the machine name in the object browser. I have also tried that in the connection string but I get the same error.

I think I may now be one stage further - i deleted the sql express entries in web.config and the database error went away. however, I am now getting the following:

DotNetNuke Configuration Error
Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Inetpub\vhosts\trashmouth.co.uk\httpdocs\Config\Backup_2006721218\web_.config'.Access to the path 'C:\Inetpub\vhosts\trashmouth.co.uk\httpdocs\web.config' is denied.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the root folder of the website ( C:\DotNetNuke by default ). Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the popup menu ( please note that if you are using Windows XP you may need to Enable Simple File Sharing before these options are displayed ). Select the Security tab. Add the appropriate User Account and set the Permissions.

If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
- the {Server}\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

If using Windows 2003 - IIS6
- the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

I have taken the action suggested - adding the network service account and propagating the permissions to all child objects but I still get the error.

any ideas?

thanks,

lukemack.
