I'm trying to follow the procedure at this link: http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/page/install_dotnetnuke and it is anything but a Wiki.

WHERE is the old-fashioned, step by step, manually configure it all procedure kept at?

I have set up my IIS App Pool and site.  Created the database and added the logins to it, with the network service, etc.  I have the App Pool and Network Service accessing the folder where the Install was unzipped to and so on.

I've also added the right connection strings to the web config, etc.  I typed in /localhost/newdevdnnvis/install/install.aspx?mode=install to do it manually because browsing to the site gives "An Error Has Occurred" and nothing else.  The 404 Screen I get of course shows the physical path to the default site because this one can't be accessed.

If I have the whole, good old-fashioned procedure (if it still exists) I can get through this.  I just can't find it.

Yep ... a bit frustrated here.  Thanks in advance for putting up with me and giving me the link to it. :)

FYI, I already have all other sites set up an entirely different way.  In the Source Code version, there is still the release.config (left out as of 5.6 or so) where one sets up everything and renames it to web.config, etc.

All other sites are set up with this method so I'm trying to do that.

Really ... I'm looking for THAT procedure please.

Thanks!

Michael,
Are you saying you have an instance of DNN running in your default "localhost" location AND you're trying to install another copy in a subfolder of that installation?

Nah, Mike I'm probably in need of some cheese with that whine. :) No, the install package is on the D:/drive in a folder set up specifically for this site and IIS is set to target it.

I'm used to the old way.  Apparently the DNN install is put in a folder AND under inetpub/wwwroot/ and I have no idea why.

I've set up:

0. Unzipped the install package to a folder on the D:/ drive. (I had tried the source code package earlier, setting up release.config and renaming it.  It didn't fly so I put the folder in recycle and started over with the more recent procedure at the link below)

1. App Pool and IIS, included IIS APPPOOL/appName in Security with Modify permissions

2. I've set up a user (SQL Login) and NTAUTHORITY/SERVICE I believe it's called in SQL 2008R2

3. Set up the web.config with connection strings and so on

4. Basically, set up everything "pre-6.x style", tried browsing to http://localhost/sitename/install/install.aspx?mode=install and no go.

All other sites are set up this way and they run fine.  I prefer the path setup of d:/sitename/website/ and not having all site folders in the root folder.  This is just for consistency sake and also because I usually install the source version.  It's handy to have in the same application if you want to create a module and use some DNN functionality.

I suppose I should "reboot" my installation way of thinking?  Just use the new style?  I'd really prefer the procedure for the full source install, not the "install only" if that's apt terminology.

 Thanks,

Mike

I think that is purely to make it easier to describe. Yes the DNN install is in some folder on your HDD. It can be anywhere that the computer can reach. The author of the instructions you have suggested inetpub\wwwroot. The ONLY thing special about that folder is that is where an IIS install puts its default web site.

IIS makes a folder accessible to a web browser by linking a virtual directory (the dnn7 bit in say http://localhost/dnn7 to the folder anywhere on your HDD.

This is both the old way and the current way. IIS Manager may make it easier/faster to set up. Later versions of IIS may give more options; but IIS has always worked like that.

Best wishes,
