My church's website is built on DNN 7.  Our church management system is online and has an API.

I want to use the church management system API to authenticate users on the DNN site... but I'm clueless on how to integrate it.

Please forgive my ignorance, but is there an extension available to help do this?  Is there a certain guide that would help me out?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not quite understanding your question - if you mean you want to authenticate against a 3rd party system (church management) then you typically use a custom authentication provider - the wiki has a good page on these. Assuming a server-to-server request you would most commonly use asp.net's HttpRequest object to call the 3rd party API and return results and authenticate/authorise the user. If you mean that you want to post requests from your church management system to DNN, the most common way to do this is to expose a service framework method in DNN -see http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/page/...
