I had SQL 2012 Express DB & Mgt Studio running OK.  I click on an object and VS 2010 came up & invalid.  I uninstalled the VS 2010.  Then the SQL 2012 Express Mgt Studio had an error indicating it needs to be re-installed.  I downloaded SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU and tried to repair it without success.  So I uninstalled Mgt Studio thinking I could re-install it but the Feature Selection> Shared Features ?has Management Tools - Basic check box checked but GREY out so I can not install it.  It indicates "to be installed from Media: MS VS 2010 Shell".  I also tried SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU & it is grey out also. 
The DB is running OK & do not want to uninstall it, but I need  Mgt Studio back.
I am on a dedicated web server Win Svr Standard 2008 32bit.

Google searches did not give a hint as what to do.

Thanks in advance for any help.

the SQL Server installer is a bit tricky, I'd Install SSMS 2014 Express (or upgrade to SQL server 2014 Express Advanced/with tools).
Do not uninstall Visual Studio, it is the platform for SSMS.

You can download SQL Server 2012 Management Studio from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downlo... - if you install this, the needed parts of VS should be reinstalled and the thing should work.

Thanks Sebastian for all of you services you provide to this community!!!!!

I was able to get SQL 2014 "Express with Advanced Services" installed

Only challenge was to Right Click on the Akamai NetSession run as admin.
