I always create my DNN sites manually. Maybe I'm just unlucky but the MS web platform installer always seems to mess things up for me.

Go to my site (markeckeard.com) and look on page 4 for the article about installed DNN 7.0 beta or something similar. The article walks you through the steps to manually set up DNN and it still applies regardless of the DNN version.

thanks for the replies.

In both these examples above the Site name (in IIS) is the same as the database name - does this always have to be the case?
(I'd just like to know what relates to what). Or is the sitename totally irrelevant and changing this would effect nothing?

I'd also like to set up initially as a development site (that will eventually replace the live site). So I'd like to use dnndev.me as the host name.
:- when going live, is it simply a matter of changing the host name in IIS to the real domain name (and also in host settings in the CMS)?

thanks.

I'm also confused as to which Authentication to use?

Previously we used SQL Authentication and used a password. The link above also use SQL Authentication (http://www.markeckeard.com/?page=4).

However the video tutorial from Chris Hammond (https://www.youtube.com/watch?annotat...) uses Windows Authentication.

I believe because we are using Windows Server 2008R2 running IIS 7.5 - that we need to add the application pool - IIS e.g. AppPool\AppPoolName (not sure if this means that we have to use windows authentication..?)

thanks

>> Not at all a must, you can have different name for IIS instance & Database name, Just make sure that you are keep correct Database name in Web.config > connection string

not sure if this means that we have to use windows authentication..?
>> Just you are taking the user/ login ( here : AppPool\AppPoolName) that is used in running this IIS site and providing that user/ login the Database access also .
If you are giving the user a password mode (while creating the user (Login) in SQL ) , then you can use sql authentication also.

Let us know its clear for you what answered above

thanks.
I tried using IIS AppPool\ourUserName, but then I get an error saying :

iis apppool\ is not a valid name because it contains invalid characters error code: 15006

I suspect it doesn't like \ backslashes (but this is what is recommended for windows server 2008 r2): http://www.dnnsoftware.com/wiki/page/...

unless I have to use Windows Authentication ..?
