Thanks fo ryour sugestions. I think I might have found the issue - it looks like all recent portals have two entries in the PortalLocalization table - one en-us and one en-GB.
The older ones created with previous 5x version of DNN that are not showing in the list only have a single en-GB entry.
It looks like the selection box uses [dbo].[GetPortals] which takes a culture code which is en-US by default .... and so that's why the list is limited.

I'm concious that the default DNN language is US (I have no idea how to change this) so every time I create a portal I have to add en-GB in languages and then remove/disable US. If you could give me an idea how to :
1. alter default system language / localisation to en-GB and remove the en-US ones, and/or if this is not a good idea,
2. suggest how I could create the missing en-US entries in the PortalLocalization table
that would be great.
Many thnaks
Rob

DNN System language is en-US and needs to be provided for ANY Website within DNN - but you may specify another default language for each website and even disable en-US.
You should add en-US for each website in Admin> Languages and save portal settings while being in this language. this should solve your issue.

Thanks Sebastian -
this didn't work but in the end I found a solution by going to Admin -> Languages, altering the site default language to US, pressing Update, then altering it back to GB, another row with en-US was created in PortalLocalization table which then made the portal appear in the option list.
Thanks for your help in arriving at this solution
