I've got 4 sites (business units) I've developed over time (6 years) and I'd like to plan combining those sites under one URL w/ sub-domains.  I have some basic questions about setting up sites under a parent / child schema.

1.  Will all the sites work on the same database and user base?
2.  Can the sites use one skin (installed once) with different homepages (sub-domained) for each site?
3.  Can each site use a different sub-domain?
4.  How does the admin work, is there one login for Admin / Host?
5.  How does page management work?
6.  Can we backup and restore sites into children?
7.  Can the sites use the same URL re-writer?

Thanks for any answers and words of wisdom,

Dave

1.  Will all the sites work on the same database and user base? Yes.  While the user-base can be shared, you must register each user in each site.
2.  Can the sites use one skin (installed once) with different homepages (sub-domained) for each site? Yes.  Every site can have a default skin layout.  If you don't specifically set a layout for a page, then it will inherit the site default.  If no site default is set, then it will use the host settings default.
3.  Can each site use a different sub-domain? Yes.  These are called parent portals.
4.  How does the admin work, is there one login for Admin / Host? Each site has a separate admin account which has permissions to edit settings for the single site.  There is also a host account that can edit installation wide settings as well as manage the individual sites.
5.  How does page management work? Page management allows you to set up your page hierarchy for each site.  You can move pages as needed and setup the skin layout and permissions needed for each page as well.  You can do this by visiting each page and then going into page settings or by going to Admin > Page Management
6.  Can we backup and restore sites into children? This feature is not currently offered.  There might be a 3rd party backup module which supports this, but I am not aware of one off the top of my head.  You could try writing some custom migration SQL Scripts to handle this.  I have done similar work in the past and I am sure there are some great DNN consultants who could help if needed.
7.  Can the sites use the same URL re-writer? Yes.  The URL re-writer works across all urls for the entire installation.

maybe you should consider setting up a Portal Group, which shares all users and you may use modules from one website to be inserted into a page of another one. This feature is included in Evoq content and may be used in dnn Platform via Sitegroup Editor (http://dnnportalgroups.codeplex.com/)
