I just attempted to deploy my first DNN site to a web host (WebHost4Life) and am having an interesting behavior.  When I click on the URL for the site on the web host the browser attaches and then redirects to the URL on localhost for the development site I copied to the web host.

Here are the steps I took:

  1. Did a backup of the SQL database on my local system and restored it to the web host
  2. Used the Copy Web option in VS2005 to copy the site to the web host (database was not in the tree)
  3. Changed Web.Config to have the proper SQL host and credentials
  4. Thought happy and positive thoughts and clicked on the remote URL

What did I do wrong and what should I do to see my site on the web?

Thanks.

You have to add an alias for your site.

On your local site (logged in as admin):

  • Go to menu item Admin->Site Settings.
  • At the bottom of the page click on "Add New HTTP Alias" link.
  • Input your site address on your hosting.
  • Backup your local DB and restore on your hosting DB. All should work properly.

Thanks for the reply and good pointer.  I don’t see the HTTP Alias on the Admin -> Site Settings but see it on the Site Settings under Host -> Portal.  I added the URL there, created a DB backup and restored it on the site.  Unfortunately, the behavior remains of going back to the localhost site when I browse to the hosting site URL.

I can edit the new (hosting site) URL on the page but there is no option to adjust or delete the localhost/ alias.

Did I miss something?

Thanks!

Delete the localhost setting from the database.  You also might have to do clear the cache to see the changes.  Host / Host settings / Advanced / Clear Cache.
