"a SQL Server login for the AppPool Identity ("IIS AppPool\DNN, if DNN is name of your IIS application pool, which uses AppPool Identity) and grant dbowner permission to it."

For this task..may i know how to do it (grant dbowner permission to it.)

If your SQL Server is configured for Mixed Authentication, you may either create a dedicated SQL Server account and provide username and password in connection string or use same windows account, your website resides in:

- Check Advanced Settings of the IIS application, your IIS Website resides in (see Basic Settings of your IIS Website).
- You will find "ASP.Net Identity" setting, which needs Modify permission for the IIS website folder as well as a permission for the database.
- If ASP.Net Identity uses a machine account (usually "Network Service"), you may create a SQL Server account for "NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE"
- If ASP.Net Identity uses "App Pool Identity", you need to create a SQL Server account per Application pool, called "IIS APPOOL\DNN" (if DNN is the name of your IIS App Pool).
- Right Click sql server login in the tree on the left of your SQL Server Management Studio and select Properties (or double click the item).
- on top left, select "user mapping" and check "Map" for your database, enter "dbo" as default schema and grant "DB Owner" role beneath.

I finally got mine working. What a hassle.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled SQL Express 2014

I had to setup a new database in WebMatrix

I then had to change the database name in the webconfig file 3 times.

Also, watchout when upgrading as the webconfig files gets overwritten & you need to reset the database name again.

you should be able restore the database and get DNN working. You need to use same or newer version of SQL Server.
