I have been searching the docs and forums but have not yet found out how to do this.

Is there a way for me to suspend my site until an upgrade is finished? Also, could a malicious user that sees that you're in the process of doing an upgrade go off and kick it off before you're ready?

How do upgrades here on www.dotnetnuke.com work? There must be tons of users trying to gain access to the site when an upgrade goes through...

I'm not aware of anything in the documentation about it.  But you can restrict access in IIS by IP address for the site being upgraded.  You could also create a "site down for maintenance" page and during the upgrade process, change the Documents setting in IIS to display that page by default and then start the upgrade by typing in the default.aspx URL manually.

Just changing the default page won't stop people from entering your site thru other pages. You can give this a try...

1. Assign a temp URL to access your portal. It may be your host's temp domain, or an IP address.
2. Move your root location to a different virtual directory or change your DNS records to go to a temp site or just delete the entry.
3. Make sure auto-update is off in the web.config.
4. Update the portal
5. Run the install thru the temp URL and install URL.
6. Switch back to root or DNS.

I usually just delete the web.config on the live server so that everybody gets an error message while I'm busy uploading. I then quickly upload everything, making sure that I FTP the new web.config LAST. This way no scripts are executed while the FTP is in process. As soon as the new web.config is uploaded I quickly go to the install link and start the process. Also, I set AutoUpgrade to false in web config so that you have to use a specific URL to initiate the upgrade. I have done countless upgrades this way and so far no problems.

IMHO upgrading a live site is asking for trouble. It's easy to point the site to a single folder with a "unavailable" message whiel you upgrade.

Becasue I also believe very strongly in backing up prior to an upgrade I actually start from scratch and create everything new and leave the old data as my backup.

The steps outlined below might help.
