I doubt this is the problem as after uploading files & visiting the site to complete the upgrade, host credentials work fine at this point

Looks like other users are now working after I tried upgrading again. Its like the host account has been removed or something

Query the Users table, if there isn't someone in there with the USERNAME of HOST than something went awry.

You can make any other user a SuperUser by flipping the IsSuperUser column on the Users table if necessary.

Just in case you want to use same Host Name and need to change the password. Edit the aspnet_Membership table and change the password and password salt values from other entries (of user whom you know password) against Host User. You can get the userid (for mapping in aspnet_Membership table) of host from aspnet_Users.
