Keith,
You could always put an HTML module above that calendar, visible to admins/editors that says "Please don't add events directly to this calendar."
I realize it doesn't completely solve what you're trying to prevent....but it might help.

I think it's a legitimate ask, if the calendar is only for display of one or more sub-calendars, designating it as such would reduce the chance of error and make the usage more clear for those that come afterward. 

It is a valid request. I have had similar problems myself with display only calendars. But as explained, this is not a feature of the current version. 

Please create a request (issue) on http://dnnevents.codeplex.com, or (even better) implement to required code change and submit a pull request for the source code repository on GitHub (https://github.com/DNNCommunity/DNN.Events).
