Hi,

I am new to DNN.

The previous developer had three websites on one instance of DNN as all three sites had same functionality but now we want to remove one of the website to another instance of DNN as this site does not have similar functionality anymore and it is just complicating the coding.

Please could someone advise if we can separate one website and if so how, any links I can follow.

Thank you

Generally speaking there is not an easy to go about this. You can always cut and paste the content, but if it's a large site that may not be the best case scenario. The one recommendation I would make would be to try to export the portal as a template so that you could then create the new site from that template. Though, one thing to keep in mind is that any modules would need to support the Exporting content capability (such as the HTML module).

You can find more info about portal templates here:

Hmmm.....not quite sure why Clinton didn't suggest this option.

Do you actually administer the server the site is on?

If so, make a copy of the site's folder on the web server. Export the SQL database and import the database with a new name.

Modify the web.config on the copy of the site to point to the new database.

Bind the new site via IIS.

Modify the HTTPAlias in the PortalAlias table to attach it to the new IP address.

You should now have 2 copies. You can then remove the unnecessary portals from the copy (or leave them in and pretend they're not there).

You can also find Backup/Restore modules on the DNN store that might make some of this easier for you.
