I am trying to create a side menu (tab like - views only current children nodes) and also have Friendly URLs (ex ../support.aspx instead of default.aspx?tabid=34.

What is the best way to do it? Currently I have found a side menu module that i like and trying to get a HrefExchanger to work.

Thanks

I use the http://www.inventua.com HRef exchanger and it does those neat urls.

They have a side menu as well which displays menu as you have asked.

You can also use the links skinobject and have displaying vertically and set the level to be displayed.. eg.. parent, root, current I'm pretty sure.

Have you tried contacting Inventua on the support forum on their site to troubleshoot the issues you are having?  I took a look at the HrefExchanger awhile back, and they were very responsive at working through some issues.  It's a great module.  I ended up not being able to use it due to some integration issues with some other, advanced modules but for a relatively simple side menu, it seems to me it should work.
