We have a Professional DNN License for our production website and we use the free Community Edition for developing new modules.

I see that the latest Professional DNN version is 8.1.0, but the version for the Community Edition is 7.4.1.

Are Community and Professional editions no longer parallel? Why is Community lagging behind?

due to marketing recommendations, DNN Corp decided to use a different version numbering scheme (although even some of their employees are struggling to get used to it).
AFAIK, Evoq content 8.1.0 is based on 7.4.0, while 8.1.1 is based on 7.4.1. Unfortunately, this makes it more difficult for community members to support Evoq clients, which will have to rely exclusively on support by DNN Corp.

Sebastian,

Thank you for the information. Whoever made that "marketing recommendation" is a real genius (insert sarcasm here). Why in the world would they think that was even remotely a good thing to do? If they are based on the same code, one being free and the other paid...for goodness sake just keep the versions the same. How can people program for DNN using Community Edition if we can't even match up the right version number easily.

Again thanks for the information. :-)

At the very least I wish they had a version "map" that explained what you just did and told you which CE Version matched to which Pro Version.

the versions aren't different for "marketing" reasons - they're different as Evoq is a set of extensions for DNN i.e. no different from any other extension (just larger). By splitting them (which should have been done from the first release), it means that they can have different release cycles i.e. no holding up platform because of evoq issues/platform can release more often than evoq etc. The messaging around it has been handled poorly (I hope this will improve soon), for now i'll create a wiki page to explain and track the versions

Cathal,

Thank you for creating a page to explain it better. We have been using DNN for several years and I (like others I assume) are a bit confused ever since "Evoq" came around.

I know you said you are going to create a page, but in the meantime I have one question about what you said, if you don't mind...

You said Evoq is an "extension" of the DNN Base Platform, which I assume is known as the free Community Edition? (Wasn't that what the previous Professional Version of DNN was, DNN CE extended with additional features?) If the Evoq extension has a different release cycle than the CE... How does one get the base platform updates into Evoq should CE be released first? Or is it a situation that every CE release causes an Evoq release, but an Evoq release does not [necessarily] cause a CE release?

Or am I just completely confused about the whole situation? O_o
