Looking for some newbie help and direction.

I am new to DNN and new to the forum.

I inherited a dnn site, www.carolinavarsity.com, and have been doing quite a bit of housekeeping and it’s looking up. We are on version 7.3 or later, and using a 2 column gravity skin. Nothing fancy.

That said, I am trying to make a change that will significantly help the flow of the site.

I am trying to move the Google Ad banner to the upper righty hand corner of the site, above the login area.

I can move the item using Inspector in Chrome, but I can’t figure out where to start to make this permanent change.    Do I star with a web page or a Template, or a container, or is it all CSS?

Using FTP access I have made changes to the default.css files, etc to make a few tweaks to the site in general, but I am lost in where to start with this move.

I have searched high and low for information on a page or template location or name that lays out the page and eventually generates the <div id="dnn_ctr694_HtmlModule_lblContent" class="Normal"> which is the  google ad module.

I am also trying to move the logo to be in the upper left hand corner of the site and get it out of the Navigation Bar.

Other than that I simply need to add some padding to the white content area’s where the text is crammed up against the borders.

Thanks in advance for any direction on where to start….

Michael,

Hello and welcome to the DNN Community! If you have taken over the CarolinaVarsity.com site then I'm curious... are you in the Charlotte area? Reason I'm asking is because I'm in the Charlotte area as well and we have a user group here too. Dale (previous DNN guy at Carolina Varsity) used to attend the user group so that's how I'm familiar with the site. We have monthly meetings and would love to have you join us. Our user group site (http://southernfrieddnn.com) is not all that current, but we are still active and meeting.

It sounds like what you want to do here is to update the "skin" or "theme" of the page. The layout is indeed created using HTML & CSS and these files reside in the a skin folder. If you have access to the server you should be able to find the skins for the site at this path YOURWEBSITE/Portals/_default/skins. Inside each of those you'll see sub-folders, but also you'll see .ASCX files. In your case with the Gravity skin you'll see a 2-col.ascx and you can modify the HTML there. You should also see a skin.css which is where you can update the CSS for the skin.

There are also several skinning resources online. Here are a few that are hopefully helpful:

Hope this is helpful and hope to see you at our Charlotte based DNN user group sometime!

I actually found the ascx files I was look for late yesterday and have already been able to move the google ads banner up and make a few more tweaks. Been an interesting process working through the DNN framework.

Michael,

We would definitely love to have you join our local DNN users group!  It's a good group of people with a wide range of interests and skills.  Hope to see you there soon!
