Hey i recently started a new job, where their previous IT person decided to do their INTRANET via DotNetNuke. this is my first experience with this, and so far it hasnt gone as well as i would have hoped.  Maybe it was just neevr configured/designed right in the first place i dunnoo...

Anyway our version of DNN that we are running is 3.1.1.1 is there a way to "flawlessly" upgrade to the new DNN 4.0 without loosing any of our already existing intranet etc...??

I wish it were easier to add "bio" pages in the section that the guy before me set up about the staff.... Right now i have no idea how to make one since it seems to me that everything DNN is program generated code and its pretty much all stored in its own database... I wanted to just get into the Intranet and start spewing out HTML, ASP, etc.. but i guess thats not going to happen. Soo im working on trying to learn as much about Dot Net Nuke as i can.

Does anyone recommend any tutorial sites/ books out there on this stuff...   It seems that this "Intranet" will become a big part of my job one of these days, and it would be nice to know how to use it... im old school... hehe but i can learn..

Thanks in advance, to all who reply..

well.. you should start by reading at least some of the documentation that comes with dotnetnuke (this is a seperate download available from the download page). Upgrading to dnn 4 is a fairly easy process that is covered in the latest documentation

With DotNetNuke you dont have to program one single line of code, you can use existing core modules or buy third party modules at snowcovered.com. If you do want to start down the programming path, i suggest you upgrade to dnn 4, and start working with VS2005 to create your own modules. If you have no prior asp.net knowledge / expierence, this might not be a very easy path to follow though.....

If all else fails, you can also call on commercial dnn support that is given by a number of people in the dnn comunity ...

So should i be looking at getting the 4.3.2 Install download or the Starter Kit.. I have some knowledge of programming, little VB and some C (++/#)  Soo i know how to do some of that stuff.  Im just hoping i can figure out how their Intranet here where i work has been done in the past.  So i shouldnt loose any existing stuff when i upgrade to the newest.  Which one would be better to go with 4.3.2 (release canidate, not sure exactly how thats suspose to be taken) or 4.0.3?  Is it just a simple install?

There are a couple of things you need to understand>

* "if it ain't broke.. dont fix it" (at least untill you now what it is you are trying to "fix" anyway)

* if the 3.1.1 dnn version is just a basic dnn version, with no third party modules, you should first upgrade to dnn 3.2.2, then switch iis to aps.net 2.0, then upgrade further to dnn 4.0.3. if you are brave you can try dnn 4.3.2.. (there are still some issues with dnn 4.3.2)

* if the dnn 3.1.1 install has third party modules, the first thing you have to find out: what modules are used, do they offer an upgrade path do newer dnn versions

* PLEASE read all documentation you can find.. dnn is no just some script you run ;)

* if you start your endeavour: please, work on a copy site!

cheers,

Erik
