I only found out about DNN vNext being put in the backburner from Joe Brinkman's tweet replies to me a few days ago when he mentioned the admin rewrites and I was asking why not put these efforts into DNN vNext. I believe vNext is a huge undertaking.

Was there any public announcements about this? I didn't see any. Seems like lack of transparency. I have learned to not put high hopes on what DNNSoftware says or promises.
Even in their blog posts when they say something like "Next week we will or I will... ". Weeks go by and there's nothing. I mean don't promise anything if there's doubt about delivery capabilities. (Ranting)

In general, the ASP.NET CMS marketplace sucks. DNN has a nice marketplace but I don't want to do WebForms. DNN MVC support is lacking. I can't do what I want to do using the third part controls I use. Now I am thinking about doing stuff in Javascript and WebAPI which means more work.

Umbraco has no marketplace to sell stuff. It's like they made a conscious decision not to have one.
The other open source ASP.NET CMS offerings are too small.

Commercial CMS like Kentico and Sitefinity are expensive and not too open. I think if you want to develop for them, you have to buy a license first.

If you look at PHP, they have WordPress, Drupal and Joomla. Each has a huge following and add-ons. If DNN went the ASP.NET Core way, DNN could have entered the Linux world and complete with those guys. You'll get a lot of Linux ASP.NET developers creating DNN modules. The market will thrive more and more users will use DNN.

Maybe in 2018 vNext will be considered seriously.

DNN 9 was discussed at the Southern Fried DNN meeting tonight. There was a webcast and it was recorded. You should be able to view the recording shortly. Joe Brinkman describes the changes coming to DNN 9 in a fair amount of detail. DNN 9 is promised before the end of the year (and definitely NOT on December 24).

DNN9 is not a .NET vNext/ASP.net Core solution, but an evolution of DNN8
