Can anyone explain to me the difference between skins, themes and templates for DNN?  I want to create what I think is a skin, but I don't know where to start.  Ideally I would like to use visual studio to create as (skin?, theme?, template?)

Skins and Themes are essentially the same thing.

A Skin Package (Theme), typically consists of one or multiple Skins (layouts), and one or more Containers.

Basically a Skin allows you to change the "Look" of a page, the layout, CSS, menu, etc.

A Container allows you to change the "look" of a Module, by wrapping it in HTML (container), which can also customize CSS and provide ways to define/style the "actions" for a module.

If you want to create a new Theme (skin package) I suggest you start with my Visual Studio project templates http://cjh.am/dnntemplates

This will allow you to create a project in Visual Studio which consists of a prepackaged Theme (skins and containers) and make modifications to those files in order to customize the theme.

Here's a text tutorial for creating a Theme from the template

Chris,

Thank you for the reply and the answers.  I did use your tutorial on creating my own modules with VS a while back and it was very helpful
and well done.
I'll try your suggestion and see what I can learn.
