I have uploaded a php file inside its own, newly created "Verify" folder.  The php is used for verification purposes, and the first time it's run it should create another file inside the same folder.  I have given the containing "Special" folder write permission to Everyone (not nice, but I didn't know a better way).  I also set the properties of the php to "System" in addition to the default "Archive" (maybe this is not needed).

I have also enabled php from the Control Panel of the hosting provider, and  by entering the php url in a browser confirmed that it responds.

However, although the  php file runs, it doesn't create the additional file, so verification always fails.

Is there something I can do to fix this, or is it something that is impossible?

you shouldn't mix technologies, if you want/need to use PHP, create a folder physically outside the DNN website folder and integrate it as virtual directory application.

Thank you for your response.

Actually, I'm not quite sure how to do that.  Through the Plesk Panel, I have access to a "Root Directory", which is the parent of the httpdocs directory.  Do you mean that I should create a folder under this "Root Directory"? and if so, how would I integrate it as a virtual directory application.

If you mean that I should have direct access to IIS, in order to create a virtual directory application, I'm afraid that I don't, so in this case I'm stuck.

Should I get VPS to be able to do what you say?

I suggest asking your Hosting provider for the best configuration for your use case.
