All appreciated. However, it would be helpful to have some kind of time scope -- just a ballpark.  Days? Weeks? What?

Sorry, no dates and specifc timeframes can be given.  I understand both points of view but it is a Catch22.

1) If release dates are publicized and missed then the community gets up in arms over it even though there are valid reasons for delay.  Vista is an extreme example of this, but still a good example.

2) If we do not post release dates, the community still gets up in arms about not knowing a general or specific release time.

You cannot please everyone, and the second option is what the core team has decided.

Again not asking for a date, just ballpark idea.  You are either a day from release or not.  If not they is it weeks or months?  I appreciate not wanting to give dates, it seems to be the IT way, but reality is we would like/need to have some sort of roadmap of when.

I do wonder what would happen if Microsoft chose option 2.  :)    You get the patch when you get it.

What other products do not give any dates, points of reference for releases, etc?  Not that I want DotNetNuke to follow any other bad examples.

When a date is given and it is missed..   the reasons for the miss are usually given.   By choosing option 2, you no longer have to give reasons for anything because nothing was promised.  That is definitely the easy way out.

I think what helps here is looking at stages (and what percentage of stages have been completed) as opposed to an actual date. So I'm not sure if a formal process is documented anywhere, but a new release usually goes through several phases. So whereas you couldn't say it would be ready within 6 months, you can say that we are in the last phase(s) to a release which indicates it probably won't be that long assuming all goes well.

So we've had a private beta test, a RC, public beta testing, a RC point release and more public beta testing. Could be another point release is needed or could  be the next one is official. One of the last steps you usually see is dogfooding where it is run on the DotNetNuke site. As you can see the DNN site shows 4.3.2 which is an indication we could be one step closer.

Concept
Design
Build
Private Beta Testing
Initial RC and Public Beta Testing
Additional Public Beta(s) if needed
DotNetNuke main site dogfooding
Formal Release
(Maintenance Release)

Personally, I wait awhile after a final release. I have 3.1.1 and it works great for me so am in no hurry to go through the pain of an upgrade. :)
